»One of the things I wanted to show in Rebel is that underneath all the bullshit macho defense, there was that pure drive for affection, and it didn’t matter who the recipent might be.«

Nicholas Ray
about Rebel without a Cause (1955)

In the work Without a Cause (Tomas) a collaboration with journalist and activist Tomas Hemstad, we explore representation of masculinity, alternative power structures and how these are defined in an intimate social space. With a popular cultural reference as a starting point - Nicholas Ray's iconic Rebel Without a Cause (1955) – a film with an ambiguous erotic undertone. We rewrite and quote parts of Ray's script and put it in a contemporary context and discussion. With allusions to the film's fictional characters, director, and Hemstad himself, along with clothing and music, we introduce different scenarios describing a community, different encounters and violent intimacy.
